Biography

• Leader of the Alberta NDP from 1984 to 1993

• Leader of the Opposition in the Alberta Legislature from 1986 to 1993
• First elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1982, re-elected in 1986 and 1989
• Returned to politics in 2001 as a school trustee representing East Edmonton until 2004
• Returned to the Alberta Legislature from 2004 to 2008
• Holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta and a Master of Sciences degree from the University of Calgary
• Has worked as a teacher and financial planner
• Has been a columnist for the Edmonton Sun and Red Deer Advocate
• Served as Provincial Secretary of the Alberta NDP from 1975 to 1979 and as President from 1979 to 1983
